Headstart helps students ease into uni life
An award-winning program recognised for its positive influence on the personal and educational development of regional teenagers will be in the spotlight at the University of the Sunshine Coast on Wednesday 17 March.
The success of the University of the Sunshine Coast’s Headstart Program last year was acknowledged by a prestigious Australian Learning and Teaching Council citation worth $10,000.
This semester, 100 students from 32 Sunshine Coast high schools are participating in Headstart by attending on-campus lectures, studying and undertaking assessments.
An information event for the families of senior high school students interested in enrolling in Semester 2 will be held at USC from 6pm on 17 March.
External Relations Manager Kylie Russell said students could choose from more than 90 courses and gain credit towards a USC degree.
Some of the most popular Headstart courses are creative writing, computer-based art and design, information technology, Japanese language, psychology, science and anatomy.
“It’s all about improving their transition from Year 12 to University,” Ms Russell said.
“Once a student has done Headstart, they’re familiar with the workload, the people and campus life. This means they can hit the ground running as an undergraduate.”
The information night will allow Year 11 and Year 12 students and their families to talk to USC staff and other Headstart participants about their experiences.
Details will be provided on how the program works, its costs and courses. An optional campus tour will be available from 5.15pm.
Applications for Semester 2 close on 14 May.
