National recognition for water testing facility
15 October 2010
A specialised water testing facility at the University of the Sunshine Coast has achieved some sparkling results in gaining accreditation from the National Association of Testing Authorities (NATA).
NATA recently reviewed USC’s Analytical Services at Sippy Downs and accredited the facility for both chemical testing and biological testing.
It is now the only dedicated NATA public water testing facility on the Sunshine Coast.
Analytical Services is operated by University staff who specialise in a range of scientific fields. They offer a comprehensive water analysis service for clients, with a particular focus on environmental, potable, marine and sewage water.
The facility also supports USC’s emphasis on sustainability by providing greater opportunities for Chemistry teaching and research at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
Analytical Services manager and chemist Michael Nielsen said the technical expertise of the facility’s staff enabled efficient processing of samples and a quick turnaround of results to clients.
“Our geographical position and our experience in local water testing allow us to easily service the specific local needs of our clients,” he said.
USC’s Dean of Science, Health and Education Professor Rod Simpson said the accreditation of the facility recognised the high level of professional expertise of Analytical Services staff.
“The NATA accreditation provides an exciting opportunity for our staff to participate in regional engagement and work more closely with outside groups, especially those based on the Sunshine Coast,” he said.
