Nursing graduate enjoys career change

Nursing graduate Cathrine Evetts

6 May 2010

After 35 years practising physiotherapy, a former Marcoola resident has graduated from the University of the Sunshine Coast straight into a new career.

Cathrine Evetts received her Bachelor of Nursing Science (Graduate Entry) at the recent USC Graduation Ceremony at Sippy Downs.

She is already working in Texas, in the state’s far south west, after gaining a place in the Graduate Nurse program of the Toowoomba and West Moreton Health District.

“My next rotation will be the Baillie Henderson Hospital in Toowoomba and then in orthopaedics at Toowoomba Base Hospital,” she said.

Ms Evetts enrolled at USC seeking a new challenge and now intends to use her degree as a stepping stone to work as a rural and remote nurse.

“It allowed me to change direction into a much wider field of opportunity and I’d also like to do my Masters to specialise in geriatric mental health.”

Although initially daunted by returning to study after more than three decades in business, she was grateful for the level of support and assistance offered by University staff.

“It’s not easy as a mature, working, full-time student, especially as I did not have a computer background,” she said.

“But I enjoyed learning in the lecture theatres and found presenting in group tutorials a stimulating exercise in communication and delegation.”

Ms Evetts said she also appreciated the practical scenarios provided by USC tutors who were still working in their fields of expertise.
