USC makes record number of offers

New USC students take part in a campus tour

14 January 2010

Interest in studying at the University of the Sunshine Coast has risen sharply, with the University today making a record number of offers for tertiary places.

2,643 people have to date been offered places to start studying at USC in Semester 1, 2010, up 26 per cent on last year.

That number is expected to approach 3,000 when Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre (QTAC) offer rounds are completed next month.

USC’s most sought-after degree is its Bachelor of Nursing Science, which was introduced three years ago in response to a nationwide shortage of qualified nursing graduates.

There also has been strong demand for places in other health-related degrees at USC, especially Sport and Exercise Science, Paramedic Science, Psychology and Occupational Therapy.

The 2,643 offers for places at USC include 1,908 offers to Sunshine Coast applicants and 488 to residents from across Queensland. The remaining offers are to applicants from interstate and overseas.

USC’s Acting Vice-Chancellor Professor Greg Hill said the 26 per cent jump in offers for USC was boosted by a surge in interest from local school-leavers.

“There had been a decline previously in the number of Year 12s applying to go to university, but that has turned around this year,” he said.

“To increase our number of offers by 550 is quite incredible.”

Professor Hill congratulated all applicants who received an offer today and he looked forward to welcoming them to USC during Orientation Week from 15-19 February.

The University of the Sunshine Coast is still accepting applications to study in 2010. Contact Tania Halliday at USC on 5430 2876 for more details.

The major round of offers was released online through the Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre (QTAC) at 1am today (Wednesday 14 January) and enrolment packs from USC will begin arriving in applicants’ mailboxes over the next few days.

Students have until Friday 22 January to respond to the January 14 offer round.
Responding promptly to the offer pack will guarantee a place at USC in Semester 1, which begins February 22.

Anyone who has applied to USC but does not receive an offer pack within the next few days should contact Tania Halliday at the University on 5430 2876.
