Shift the way you view art at USC Gallery

A section of LM Noonan's 'casual accretion detail 2'

25 January 2010

An exhibition about change, perception, style and life by HEW Chee Fong and LM Noonan, called Shift, will officially kick off the exhibition year at the University of the Sunshine Coast Gallery on Thursday 4 February at 6pm.

Gallery Curator Dawn Oelrich said the exhibition would be very contemporary in presentation, combining painting, sculpture, installation, photography and digital HEW Chee Fong's work 'emotional baggage'imaging.

“Both artists have exhibited nationally and internationally, and it is a wonderful opportunity to have them exhibit at the University,” she said.

Ms Oelrich said HEW Chee Fong and LM Noonan exemplified a belief held by late Australian artist Ian Burn that “artists see with their eyes open”.

“This exhibition presents two artists whose eyes were opened by the personal events of the past five years and it has led them to re-evaluate and rediscover the reasons they make art,” she said.

“Events in their lives have led them to take a long look at their art practises and the studio process. They find their work is now unsystematic and less controlled, with not a little serendipity thrown in as their notions of value change.

“Previous expectations of identity are questioned in this exhibition which presents all new works by these well-respected Sunshine Coast artists.”

The Gallery’s full exhibition program for Semester 1 is now available online on the University’s website.

The Shift exhibition will continue until Saturday 27 February and admission is free and open to the public. The USC Gallery is open from 10am to 4pm Mondays to Saturdays.
