Journalism student scoops top scholarship

Stephanie McLeay receives her scholarship from Tim Fairfax AM

22 February 2010

Urangan State High School graduate Stephanie McLeay has received a $12,000 academic excellence scholarship to study at the University of the Sunshine Coast.

Stephanie, 17, will start a Bachelor of Journalism today (Monday 22 February) after receiving one of two annual Tim Fairfax Regional Scholarships last week.

These scholarships were established in 2008 and are designed to assist students from regional or remote areas.

Stephanie, who achieved an OP4, plans to specialise in investigative or travel journalism and is excited by the opportunities on offer at USC.

“I chose to study at USC because I heard it has one of the best journalism classes in Queensland, and I wanted the best opportunity to get a head start in my chosen career,” she said.

“I also thought that the Sunshine Coast would be a much nicer place to live than busy Brisbane.”

Stephanie said she was extremely grateful to have received the scholarship.

“Tertiary education away from home isn't cheap and, given my circumstances, I'm not sure if I could have gone on to study here without the scholarship,” she said.

“It’s also a good feeling to have my hard work in Year 12 recognised with this award.”

The Tim Fairfax Regional Scholarships are among six $12,000 academic excellence scholarships awarded annually at USC.

The other scholarships include two Renouf Family Scholarships, which support students in financial need, and two Chancellor’s Scholarships, which are awarded for high academic achievement.
