Student, academic to inspire young readers
Successful Buderim illustrator Michelle Pike will offer sneak peeks of new children’s books when she presents at the Voices on the Coast literature festival at the University of the Sunshine Coast from 7-12 June.
The mother of two, who illustrated TV celebrity Andrew Daddo’s children’s book ‘Letters to Santa’ after an offer from a major publisher who visited her Eumundi Markets stall, will be among 27 presenters.
More than 4,500 children from 75 schools will attend the 15th annual youth literature festival.
Organised by Immanuel Lutheran College and USC, it will feature well-known writers such as Andy Griffiths and Nick Earls.
Ms Pike, who has a son attending Immanuel, is now studying a Bachelor of Arts (Design and Communication) at USC part-time.
“There’s always more to learn about the artistic and literary industries,” said the 40-year-old artist who also sells merchandise with her designs.
“I love the course, which I’ve structured around my work and family life. USC’s Head of Creative Writing Gary Crew is one of my favourite lecturers and the content is so relevant to what I want to do next – produce a graphic novel.”
Associate Professor Crew also will present at the Voices festival, on the topic ‘A lifetime of writing’.
He has published more than 40 novels for young adults and his accolades include the National Children’s Book Award and two state Premier’s Awards.
Ms Pike will discuss anthropomorphism – or the art of humanising animals – in workshops for school students on Monday 7 June and Tuesday 8 June.
“I’ll also have pre-launch viewings of my illustrations in a wildlife book series by former TV Getaway presenter Sorrel Wilby and a children’s book called ‘Poppy Wash’ written by my sister Kerry Brown.”
Ms Brown, a Gold Coast children’s book author, is presenting at the festival.
Voices on the Coast coordinator Kelly Dunham said the selection of authors, illustrators, poets and performers aimed to encourage children’s love of literature.
“The festival has really grown since it started in 1996 with 23 schools and 10 presenters,” she said.
“Besides the two days for students from Years 5 to 12, there are now adult events called Voices Plus.”
The festival is supported by grants from Arts Queensland, RADF and the Sunshine Coast Regional Council. For tickets and information call 5477 3437 or go to www.immanuel.qld.edu.au/voices.
