Student event donates to rescue helicopter
The community spirit of a team of students from the University of the Sunshine Coast has been recognised by one of the Coast’s key emergency services.
The AGL Action Rescue Helicopter was a beneficiary of Operation Rescue, a public event organised and run by eight USC Public Relations students at Kawana’s Stockland Park.
Helicopter service spokesperson Penny Crebbin praised the University students for undertaking the event and doing “an excellent job”.
“The day allowed us to share our work with the community and provide an insight into our vital role,” Ms Crebbin said. “The donation is outstanding.”
The students last week presented the helicopter service with $1,500, raised through donations at the front gate and raffles.
More than 600 Sunshine Coast residents attended the event, celebrating the life-saving work of services also including police, fire and rescue, ambulance, Red Cross Blood Bank, Volunteer Coast Guard and SES.
USC student coordinator Cortney Muller said the team was delighted with the success. “We couldn’t have asked for a better turn-out, especially for a first-time event,” she said.
“It was fantastic to see families getting involved and we’re pleased that local services are receiving the recognition they deserve.”
The students hope Operation Rescue will be held in the future. The helicopter is a non-profit organisation relying heavily on community support.
