Perth student gains $12,000 scholarship
Tamsyn Burness of the Perth suburb of Connolly has received a $12,000 academic excellence scholarship to study at the University of the Sunshine Coast.
Tamsyn, 18, is in her first year of a Bachelor of Journalism degree, majoring in journalism and creative writing, and was one of only two recipients of the annual Chancellor’s Scholarships.
She plans to become a television presenter, work as a music or travel journalist, and eventually lecture in communication or the creative arts.
Tamsyn is a graduate of St Marks Anglican College in Perth.
She said she felt blessed, honoured and grateful for the scholarship and was excited to be studying at USC after receiving a Tertiary Entrance score of 98.7 (equivalent to an OP1).
“The scholarship will give me a head start financially, and allow me the opportunity to pursue postgraduate study,” she said.
“I initially considered studying in Brisbane, but I fell in love with the Sunshine Coast and didn't want to leave it.
“I investigated the courses available at USC and was extremely impressed with the internship opportunities available to journalism students, as well as the university's laid-back feel and intimate approach to teaching.”
Tamsyn’s family have moved from Western Australia to Queensland and have settled at Noosa Waters.
The Chancellor’s Scholarships are among six $12,000 academic excellence scholarships awarded annually at USC. The other scholarships include two Renouf Family Scholarships, which support students in financial need, and two Tim Fairfax Regional Scholarships for students from regional or remote areas.
