USC students receive scholarships to travel
A budding travel journalist from Noosa Heads is packing for her first European adventure as one of five University of the Sunshine Coast students awarded Education Australia Ltd scholarships worth $25,000 in total.
Instead of starting the third year of her USC Bachelor of Arts (Journalism) at the Sippy Downs campus, 19-year-old Katie Fraser will leave on 23 January to spend six months studying at the Amsterdam campus of INHolland University.
“This $5,000 scholarship is an awesome opportunity and I’m so grateful,” said the excited former Sunshine Beach State High student.
“It will be a huge help in paying for flights, insurance and most of my accommodation in a share room on campus.”
Katie said she loved writing and interacting with people and expected to develop confidence by studying in the Netherlands where she knew no-one.
“I expect to learn a lot about other cultures which is pretty important as I plan to become a travel journalist,” she said.
She said she applied through USC’s award-winning Global Opportunities program “on the spur of the moment”.
“I previously assumed it would be too expensive to go but I didn’t want to miss the opportunity,” she said. “Then I found out about scholarships too.”
Katie said she chose USC for her degree because of its journalism internships, “chilled-out atmosphere”, supportive tutors, smaller classes and close location.
USC International recruitment officer Sarah Macdonald said two other USC students received Education Australia Ltd “study overseas” scholarships for 2010. They are:
- Malcolm Haylett of Mooloolaba, doing Bachelor of Business Marketing, spending this semester in Sweden at Halmstad University; and
- Samantha Davoren of Bli Bli, doing Bachelor of Education/Bachelor of Arts, attending Aarhus University in Denmark.
In addition, two international students received EAL “study in Australia” scholarships for Semester 1 at USC. They are:
- Brazilian student Natalia Tintori Costa, at USC since 2007, doing Bachelor of Business (International Business); and
- Swedish student Anders Lindgreen, new to USC in 2010, doing Bachelor of Sports and Exercise Science, previously won Student of the Year at Sunshine Coast TAFE.
