USC festivities support Indigenous health

27 April 2010

From Dreamtime dance to a documentary screening, Aboriginal culture will be celebrated at the University of the Sunshine Coast tomorrow, Wednesday 28 April.

USC is holding its own Close the Gap Day from 11am to 3pm at the Uni Club to raise awareness of the national Indigenous health crisis.

The Close the Gap campaign, which is supported by a large coalition of groups including Oxfam, calls on Australian governments to take action to achieve Indigenous health equality within a generation (25 years).

USC Indigenous Services Officer Corey Czok said the local campus event would include an Aboriginal bush tucker tour, free barbecue, Dreamtime story telling and Aboriginal dance workshops.

He said the Close the Gap DVD would be screened and the pledge signed.

According to the Oxfam website, more than 138,000 Australians have pledged support for the campaign, which aims to close the life expectancy gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians.

The campaign seeks a national action plan including an increase in Indigenous access to, and participation in, health services delivery.
