USC helps Zarah fulfil teaching dream
From Caboolture to Gladstone via remote Fiji, Zarah Dare has used her University of the Sunshine Coast degree to achieve her teaching dream.
When the former Caboolture resident officially graduated from USC on Friday 1 October with an Education/Science degree, she had no need to look for a job.
In fact, Zarah had to get back to Gladstone for her work at Gladstone State High School.
“I secured my first teaching position before I had even completed my last University exam in June,” the elated 21-year-old said.
She was among hundreds of new graduates at the Sippy Downs campus ceremony, the first time USC has held a second semester ceremony due to enrolment growth.
Zarah, a former student of St Saviours College at Toowoomba, is now teaching mathematics and physical education to students from Years 8 to 12.
“I enjoy influencing, inspiring and making a difference in the lives of youth by believing in them and helping them reach their full potential,” she said.
“This is the best part of my occupation and I have USC to thank for the opportunity to shape these students’ lives.”
Zarah said University had also inspired future ambitions of travelling to teach students in less fortunate countries.
“I had an amazing experience when USC, linked with Fiji Dreaming, gave me the opportunity to travel to a rural remote village in the Fijian highlands to help develop an effective education system and a sustainable lifestyle,” she said.
“My Education degree included practical teaching experiences in Caboolture high schools, which were excellent preparation for my current employment.”
Zarah said USC offered a personal learning experience and a relaxed atmosphere, with approachable lecturers who were willing to help students.
“As the recipient of a scholarship, I know the University also has fantastic student support services, including financial,” she said.
