USC staff celebrate International Women's Day

5 March 2010

A free breakfast function for staff and students at the University of the Sunshine Coast will look at the fun and serious sides of feminism on International Women’s Day, Monday 8 March.

USC adjunct professor Dr Ivana Milojevic, a passionate social researcher, educator and activist, will discuss the topic “Feminism and Humour” at 9am in the Brasserie Hall.

Her research, which has been published internationally, includes feminism, peace and conflict, culture, racism, education, communication and gender.

USC Equity and Diversity Officer Marjorie Blowers said Dr Milojevic’s talk would complement the local Women’s Day theme of “equal rights, equal opportunities and progress for all”.

“This University is well-known for acknowledging diversity and the equality of women in the workforce and this shows in our employment and enrolment records,” Ms Blowers said.

“About two-thirds of the staff and students are women – including many of our high-achievers and senior academics – so the campus is a fantastic place for celebrating.”

USC last year received its fifth consecutive citation from the Equal Opportunity For Women in the Workplace Agency (EOWA) as an Employer of Choice for Women.
The citations are awarded annually in recognition of efforts by organisations to increase the representation of women at senior staff levels and to help staff maintain work/life balance.

Staff and students are encouraged to wear the official International Women’s Day colours of purple, green and white to the continental breakfast function, featuring live music, at the USC Brasserie from 8am to 10am on Monday.
