Athletes aim high for National Uni Games
Eighteen students from the University of the Sunshine Coast have set their sights on sporting glory at the Australian University Games in Perth later this month.
Two teams from USC will compete in the hotly-contested mixed touch and men’s basketball competitions between 26 September and 1 October.
Representatives of both teams are confident about their medal chances at the Games, which are expected to attract more than 5,500 competitors across 25 different sports.
USC touch player Cameron Sullivan said his team finished second at the recent Northern University Games in Toowoomba and believes it can go one better at the nationals.
And basketballers Ben Harris and Lance Denny said the USC team had improved significantly since placing fifth at the Northern University Games, thanks to the recruitment of some new star players.
USC’s Vice-Chancellor Professor Greg Hill has wished the two teams well in their quest for sporting glory at the national event.
He recently donated $5,000 to the teams to offset some of their expenses of registration, accommodation and flights, expected to total $18,000.
