Clean sweep for USC's journalism students

Graham Reeks, Alice Campion and Jamie-Leigh Carter look forward to the Queensland Media Awards

27 July 2010

The University of the Sunshine Coast has already claimed victory in a category of the 2010 Queensland Clarion (Media) Awards, even though the award winners will not be announced until late August.

That’s because all three finalists in the “Most Outstanding Journalism Student–Regional” category of the awards are from USC.

They are Graham Reeks, 31, of Landsborough, Jamie-Leigh Carter, 20, of Kippa-Ring and Alice Campion, 20, of Peregian Beach.

This will be the third time in five years that a USC student will take home the coveted prize, and the second time that USC students have completely dominated this category of the awards, which are linked to the national Walkley Awards.

USC’s Head of School of Communication Associate Professor Stephen Lamble congratulated Graham, Jamie-Leigh and Alice on becoming finalists.

“I’m proud of all three students and the work they’ve put in,” he said.

“The continued success of our students in these awards is a pretty clear endorsement of our journalism program. We do things differently from other universities … and it obviously works.”

Dr Lamble said the University’s strong links with local media organisations provided journalism students with a powerful work-related internship program that gave them a competitive edge.

Graham and Alice both completed internships with the Sunshine Coast Daily, while Jamie-Leigh is a member of USC’s team of five students who produce the Daily’s Junior Sport lift-out each week.

Previous Queensland Media Awards winners from USC are Hannah Klose (2006) and Tom Haynes (2008). All up, USC has had 10 finalists in the past five years.
