‘Corporate hippies’ to become Senior Fellows

Bob and Chris Cameron of Rockcote

26 March 2010

The “corporate hippie” owners of highly-successful paint, render and coating systems company Rockcote will soon become Honorary Senior Fellows of the University of the Sunshine Coast.

Bob and Chris Cameron will be recognised at the 2010 USC Graduation Ceremony on Friday 9 April for their visionary and professional approach to sustainability and exemplary business development.

USC Vice-Chancellor Professor Paul Thomas AM said the couple had turned their original, Yandina-based headquarters into a multi-million-dollar national business – one of the most successful on the Coast.

Rockcote’s products, people and buildings have been recognised with multiple national and international awards for their innovation, leadership and environmentally friendly business practices.

“Bob and Chris have created a nationally significant business in the areas of environmentally-friendly building products, design and sustainability practices,” Professor Thomas said.

“After founding Rockcote 30 years ago, Bob has built the manufacturing side and product range along with Chris in the role of marketing strategist and industrial relations expert.”

In 2009, the company was awarded an Australian United Nations World Environment Day Green Building Award and the Queensland Premier’s Award for leadership in business sustainability.

Chris said she was delighted to receive the Honorary Senior Fellowship.

“This is testament to the fact that you can be whatever you want to be, if you have drive, determination and passion for what you do," she said.

“Bob and I believe that success is not just measured financially, it’s about raising a happy child, living in accordance with your beliefs, respecting the planet’s resources and encouraging others to do the same.

“We are what we call corporate hippies – living in paradise here on the Sunshine Coast and running a successful, national business.”

Bob praised USC as a remarkable and progressive University that attracted the best staff.

The couple has ongoing links with USC’s Faculty of Business including mentoring, providing scholarships and participating in student research.
