The first major exhibition of artworks from Queensland’s regional gallery and university collections will open at the University of the Sunshine Coast Gallery on Thursday 23 September.

This landmark exhibition, Twelve Degrees of Latitude: Regional Gallery and University Art Collections in Queensland, is presented by USC Gallery in association with Caloundra Regional Art Gallery and Museum and Gallery Services Queensland (M&GSQ).

Co-curated by Bettina MacAulay and Brett Adlington for Queensland’s 150th year, Twelve Degrees of Latitude features major Australian, Indigenous, Pacific and European artwork dating from the 17th to the 21st century.

It includes visually spectacular small to large-scale wall works and three-dimensional, experimental and freestanding works.

M&GSQ Executive Director Rebekah Butler said her organisation was committed to providing innovative and diverse opportunities for Queensland regional galleries and audiences.

“Through this exhibition, Queensland audiences can engage with an incredible range of significant artworks and celebrate the strength of our State’s regional gallery and university art collections,” she said.

USC Gallery’s Acting Curator Yenda Carson said Twelve Degrees of Latitude was an important tribute to the contribution of the State’s regional galleries and collecting institutions towards Queensland’s social, economic and cultural wellbeing.

“It makes available to Queensland audiences, for the first time and on an unprecedented scale, a selection of artworks from 27 of the State’s regional gallery and university collections,” she said.

This exhibition will continue at the USC Gallery until 6 November.

The USC Gallery is located at the University campus on Sippy Downs Drive, Sippy Downs. It is open free to the public from 10am to 4pm Monday to Saturday and is closed Sundays and public holidays.
