Exhibition of Indigenous artwork at USC
A special edition of a touring exhibition of Aboriginal paintings, barks and sculptures will open at the University of the Sunshine Coast Gallery on Thursday 25 November.
The exhibition, across country, includes works selected from local collector Ken Hinds’ outstanding array of Australian Indigenous artwork from the Western Desert, Tiwi Islands and Arnhem Land regions.
This exhibition is being staged by the USC Gallery in association with Caloundra Regional Art Gallery and The Arts Park. It features a different selection of artworks from the touring exhibition.
The special edition exhibition will be officially opened at the USC Gallery by Maurice Philip, a close friend of Mr Hinds, at 6pm on Thursday 25 November.
USC Gallery’s acting Curator Yenda Carson said across country demonstrated the diverse nature of Aboriginal art, from across different regions and media, and also the common thread running between represented styles.
“Artworks representing styles from the Arrente School of Watercolour made known by Albert Namatjira, Pupunya Tula School, Yuendumu and Warlpiri artists, reflect the depth and breadth of Ken Hinds’ amazing collection,” she said.
“Many artworks in this special edition exhibition have been made available for public viewing for the first time in many years.”
Ms Carson said the across country exhibition had received support from Visions of Australia, a Federal Government funding program. It will continue to be on display at USC Gallery until Friday 17 December.
The Arts Park welcomes inquiries to view the Ken Hinds Cultural Collection for research, educational and curatorial purposes and can be contacted on (07) 5494 1933.
The USC Gallery is located at the University campus on Sippy Downs Drive, Sippy Downs. It is open free to the public from 10am to 4pm Monday to Saturday and is closed Sundays and public holidays.
