Top student society gains gold status

Golden Key Society members Carl Olive and Elyse Wohling celebrate the USC chapter's gold status

18 March 2010

The University of the Sunshine Coast’s chapter of a global network of high-achieving students has attained “gold status” within two years of inception.

Sunshine Coast president of the Golden Key International Honour Society, Elyse Wohling, said the achievement was a tribute to the hard work of students on campus and in the local community.

“It’s remarkable because we skipped bronze and silver to go straight to gold,” said Elyse, who is specialising in politics in her Arts (Honours) degree at USC.

“This status recognises our chapter’s dedication to community service and charity fundraising, literacy initiatives, personal development, general networking and collaboration with USC staff and other chapters.”

Charity work included a book drive for hospital patients, scenic bus tours for new international students, a Christmas hamper raffle for the Smith Family and a “dream flag” workshop during Orientation Week.

Golden Key has 370 chapters across seven regions from the United States to the United Arab Emirates. It is a non-profit group dedicated to academic excellence, networking, leadership, active community service and career help.

The USC chapter’s communications officer Carl Olive said students ranked academically in the University’s top 15 per cent were eligible to join.

“We have an intake every 12 months as well as honorary members such as Professors,” said Carl, in his fourth year of a Bachelor of International Studies.

“Membership recognises how hard a student has worked and gives them opportunities for industry networking and helping their community.”
