Journalism trio in battle for State award
Three journalism students from the University of the Sunshine Coast will go from being classmates to friendly rivals at the 2010 Queensland Clarion (Media) Awards in Brisbane on Saturday night (28 August).
Graham Reeks, 31, of Landsborough, Jamie-Leigh Carter, 20, of Kippa-Ring and Alice Campion, 20, of Peregian Beach are vying for the “Most Outstanding Journalism Student – Regional” award.
Only one can claim the coveted Clarion, but all three are simply thrilled to have been named as finalists for the awards, which are linked to the national Walkley Awards.
The students are particularly excited about the prospect of rubbing shoulders with the “who’s who” of Queensland’s media at the Brisbane Hilton on Saturday.
They said their success in becoming finalists was due to the University of the Sunshine Coast’s strong industry links.
Graham and Alice both completed internships with the Sunshine Coast Daily, while Jamie-Leigh is a member of USC’s team that produces the Daily’s Junior Sport lift-out each week. Jamie-Leigh also is about to start an internship at the Courier Mail.
USC’s Head of School of Communication Associate Professor Stephen Lamble congratulated Graham, Jamie-Leigh and Alice on becoming finalists.
He said this would be the third time in five years that the “Most Outstanding Journalism Student – Regional” award will go to a USC student, and the second time that all three finalists in this category were from USC.
Previous Queensland Media Awards winners from USC are Hannah Klose (2006) and Tom Haynes (2008). All up, USC has had 10 finalists in the past five years.
