Knight to deliver science education lecture

25 November 2010

A scientist who was this year knighted for his services to education in the United Kingdom will deliver a public lecture at the University of the Sunshine Coast on Monday evening (29 November).

Professor Sir John Holman, who is the Director of the National Science Learning Centre in the UK, will speak from 5-7pm on the achievements of this centre over the past six years, including the establishment of regional science learning centres.

The lecture has been jointly organised by the Australian College of Teachers (ACE) and USC and is aimed mainly at educators – particularly science teachers, heads of department, curriculum leaders and principals.

Sir John has taught, and written books for, learners of science and chemistry at all levels, from 11 year olds upwards. He currently teaches chemistry to honours undergraduates.

USC’s Head of Education Associate Professor Debbie Heck said Sir John’s insights into science education would be invaluable for local teachers as Australia moves towards having a national curriculum.

“The UK has already adopted a national curriculum, so it will be nice to hear Sir John talk about that process and what implications it has for science educators,” she said.

Dr Heck said the public lecture would include some time for questions, and possibly discussion about plans for a regional science learning centre on the Sunshine Coast.

The cost of attending the public lecture is $15, and $10 for ACE members. To book, contact Kim Abbey at kabbey@usc.edu.au or 5456 5918.
