Open Day opens door for study opportunities

USC's External Relations Manager Kylie Russell congratulates Open Day survey prize winner Julieanne France

19 August 2010

There were some pleasant surprises in store for Julieanne France of Caloundra when she brought her teenage son, William, along to the University of the Sunshine Coast’s Open Day on Sunday 15 August.

Julieanne was so impressed by what she saw of the University and its staff that she is now considering applying to study a postgraduate Business degree at USC herself.

She already has a Bachelor of Science from QUT, and is keen to try her hand at a Master of Business Administration (MBA).

“I would like to refine my skills after having worked in management positions for the past 13 years,” she said.

Julieanne said she could well be attending Orientation Week next February with her son, a Caloundra State High School Year 12 student who is interested in a career in photography.

She said William felt inspired to pursue a tertiary education after chatting with one of USC’s Digital Design academics on Sunday.

“We both came away from the Open Day saying that this is such a positive place and that we can do this (study at USC),” she said. “If both William and I are studying at the same time, then it will be a good household to study in.”

Another surprise for Julieanne came on Tuesday this week when she learned that she was the winner of an iPad, simply for filling in a visitor survey form during Open Day.

She said the iPad, valued at $630, would come in very handy if she starts studying again … as long as she can stop her son from borrowing it.

Julieanne and William were among 4,100 people who attended the annual event at the University. About 600 of them filled in survey forms.

Visitors had an opportunity to chat with academics about USC’s wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs, and with administrative staff about applying to study and the services provided by the University.

They also attended seminars, enjoyed campus tours and took part in some interesting hands-on activities.
