PR student helps dish out 'Dirt!'

Public Relations student Erin Pyers

6 August 2010

Promoting a film called Dirt! The Movie might sound like a challenge custom made for top advertising executives on ABC’s popular TV program The Gruen Transfer.

But it’s a challenge that University of the Sunshine Coast Public Relations student Erin Pyers of Alexandra Headland is happy to accept in her work for a local company, Food Matters, at USC’s Innovation Centre.

The movie about the importance of soil to humans and many other living creatures will screen at the Innovation Centre auditorium on Wednesday 11 August from 6.30pm.

It is open to the public and will be the first of a monthly series of documentaries that James Colquhoun and Laurentine ten Bosch of Food Matters have described as “Movies That Matter”.

Erin, a second-year student at USC and a Student Ambassador for the Innovation Centre, said Mr Colquhoun and Ms ten Bosch aim to showcase some of the world’s best films on nutrition, health and sustainability.

“This ‘Movies That Matter’ series will inform, inspire and empower the Sunshine Coast community,” she said.

“Dirt! The Movie tells the story of Earth’s most valuable and underappreciated source of fertility, from its miraculous beginning to its crippling degradation.”

Erin said Wednesday’s event also would include a mini health expo, healthy snacks and a Q&A panel featuring experts in the fields of nutrition, sustainability and health.

One panel member will be Graeme Sait, the founder of Yandina-based Nutri-Tech Solutions, a world leader in biological farming. Graeme will provide his expert opinion on the relationship between soil, animal and human health.
