Students to become immersed in language

A Sunshine Coast school student learns from a Japanese student from USC

29 July 2010

Almost 150 students from nine high schools will speak nothing but Japanese tomorrow (Friday 30 July) in a special language immersion day at the University of the Sunshine Coast.

The Year 10 and 11 students will join in a range of activities with native speakers from Japan as part of this annual event organised by USC’s Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.

Similar language immersion days will be held at the University over the next two weeks for high school students studying French, German, Indonesian and Italian.

Organiser Gaby Ziegann said the language immersion days were designed to activate students’ language learning skills.

“The students will be interacting with native speakers, attending lectures, computer workshops and conversation classes and joining in some fun, interactive activities,” she said.

The schools involved tomorrow are: Caloundra City School, Kawana Waters State College, Immanuel Lutheran College, Ipswich Grammar School, Matthew Flinders Anglican College, Nambour Christian College, Narangba Valley State High School, Sunshine Coast Grammar School and Unity College Caloundra.
