University gears up for Ride to Work Day

Jacqui Hayter and Tim Cottman-Fields enjoy riding to USC

11 October 2010

The University of the Sunshine Coast is putting its own spin on the national Ride to Work Day on Wednesday 13 October.

As part of its emphasis on sustainability, the University has encouraged all staff and students to join in its Ride to Work (campus) Day.

USC will hold a special breakfast at the UniClub from 7.30-10.30am to reward all those who cycle, walk, use public transport and even car pool on the day.

Staff and students can register for the event by emailing ride2work@usc.edu.au

So far, more than 160 people have registered and are in the running to win prizes, including cycling gear from TravelSmart Sunshine Coast and a $600 bicycle from Anaconda.

The USC breakfast event will coincide with the launch of a new road safety campaign by the Sunshine Coast Council at the UniClub at 9.30am.

USC’s Vice-Chancellor Professor Greg Hill said he hoped the Ride to Work (campus) Day would encourage greater use of alternative methods of transport.

“With the level of growth that USC is experiencing, in conjunction with economic and environmental factors, it’s important that students and staff are aware of the opportunity to be less dependent upon carbon based means of transport,” he said.

“If you've ever thought of riding or walking to work, this will be the day to give it a go.”

Professor Hill said the University now housed a modern bus transit centre, recently introduced priority car parking for car-poolers, and aimed to make life easier for cyclists.

“Promoting the bike path network leading to the campus and establishing new facilities for bike riders will be a priority for USC in the coming year,” he said.
