USC gains new award for disability services

The University of the Sunshine Coast’s concerted efforts in providing access for people with disabilities earned high acclaim last week.

The Spinal Injuries Association presented USC with an award for the Best Local Business/Community Service Provider at its inaugural Inclusive Community Champions ceremony at the Lake Kawana Community Centre on Tuesday 23 November.

The Association also presented awards in four other categories to the Nambour Police Citizens Youth Club, the Cooroy Library, Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve (Sunshine Coast Council) and Windward Passage Holiday Apartments.

Spinal Injuries Association CEO Mark Henley said the University was a deserved winner in its category because it had provided a fully accessible and inclusive service.

“USC was designed with wheelchair access in mind, catering for all people who have disabilities and, as a result, creating an inclusive community,” Mr Henley said. “Members of the association nominated USC for the award because of this.”

The University’s disability support services include wheelchair access, lifts, Braille signage, motorised scooters, disabled car parking spaces and wheelchair accessible toilets.

USC’s Student Equity/Diversity Officer Marjorie Blowers accepted the award on behalf of the University at last Tuesday’s ceremony.

“This award gives USC recognition for being an organisation that is willing to assist people with disabilities and provide an environment where people with disabilities have equal access.”

“It is important for our organisation, and for society in general, to provide equal access for all individuals.”
