USC to hold Headstart information night
The University of the Sunshine Coast will outline its award-winning Headstart program for senior high school students at a special information event on Wednesday 8 September from 6pm.
The information session is for students who will be in Years 11 and 12 in 2011, and their parents. It will cover the program requirements, the costs involved and the scholarships available for Headstart applicants.
USC External Relations Manager Kylie Russell said Headstart was designed to create a seamless transition from school to university.
“Headstart students can complete accredited university courses in their area of interest while still at high school and they can extend their academic experiences with courses that count towards their Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE),” she said.
“Headstart also gives you an idea of what university life is like and helps prepare you for future study.
“It provides guaranteed entry into most USC degrees if you successfully complete two courses within the Headstart program and obtain a QCE from your school.”
Ms Russell said visitors to the information event on Wednesday could also join in guided tours of the University with current USC students from 5.15pm.
More than 650 students from 30 high schools from Redcliffe to Gympie have participated in Headstart since it began at USC in 2003. The program last year earned a prestigious Australian Learning and Teaching Council citation for enhancing Year 11 and 12 students’ development as individuals and as learners.

Meanwhile, 19 high-achieving students from 12 different Sunshine Coast high schools last week received $375 Headstart scholarships at a celebration at USC.
The event acknowledged the support of scholarship donors, including the Kirk Foundation, The Encouragement Foundation, and the Rainbow Charitable Foundation.
