Accounting graduate projects success
A Business (Accounting) degree from the University of the Sunshine Coast has launched the project management career of a Banksia Beach graduate.
Jarryd Dewar, 21, gained his job in the civil division of FKG (FK Gardner and Sons) in March, before he officially received his degree at the USC Graduation ceremony on 20 April.
Jarryd, who grew up in the Caboolture area, is now a project assistant in the company’s Windsor office in Brisbane.
FKG has more than 350 staff across Queensland and northern New South Wales in commercial construction, civil, development, plant hire and plumbing.
Jarryd said his University studies and industry experience helped him get the first interview and he won the job after a second panel interview.
“I worked part-time at Ban Tacs Accountants at Ningi for two years of my degree,” he said. “I now use my numbers knowledge to estimate costings so I can become a project manager.”
He became interested in the field after taking two project management courses at University and intends to pursue further studies in engineering.
“What USC really taught me was how to organise myself, how to research and find answers to things quickly, as well as communication skills,” he said.
“Accounting is very handy and even though I’m not working as an accountant, I use things I’ve learned every day at work.”
Jarryd, a keen surfer and musician, said he chose USC for three reasons: the more laidback lifestyle compared to the city, the good reputation of its Faculty of Business and the high quality of its teachers.
