Anatomy on show in two bodies of work

Untitled by Aaron Hill

27 April 2011

Illustrator Aaron Hill’s dramatic exhibition The Anatomy of the Incomplete will open at the University of the Sunshine Coast Gallery at 6pm on Thursday 5 May.

Hill’s doctoral research in Visual Art & Design and Creative Writing is presented as a series of drawings and installation works in this exhibition that will be officially opened by USC’s Associate Professor of Creative Writing Dr Gary Crew.

USC Gallery Curator Dawn Oelrich said Hill had used visual art and literature to create a narrative framework that explores the role of the illustrated book as object, the human body as object and the relationship between a metaphoric object and the space it inhabits.

“Hill’s work is confronting at times but evocative as it is concerned with the portrayal of the self in contemporary culture,” she said.

“His artwork questions the value of image in a society where there is over-representation or an overabundance of images, blurring the boundaries of truth and invention.”

Brisbane artist Judy-Ann Moule’s exhibition Memory Sense will be opened by Dr Mark Pennings, Senior Lecturer at QUT Creative Industries, on the same evening.

Ms Oelrich said Moule’s exhibition also focused on body and the memory of touch.

“Through description and symbolism, Moule recounts a journey from repression and voiceless-ness to a space that is noisy and richly sensual,” she said.

“Judy-Ann Moule uses found and cast-off materials to transform into ‘un-forms’ – art that is odd and vaguely erotic. Her work is inherently tactile and her three-dimensional works are at times both alluring and abject.”

Both exhibitions will continue until Saturday 5 June.

The USC Gallery is located at the University campus on Sippy Downs Drive, Sippy Downs. It is open free to the public from 10am to 4pm Monday to Saturday and closed Sundays and public holidays.

The 2011 University of the Sunshine Coast Gallery program is proudly supported by Coastline BMW and the Kurtz family.
