Biology buddies gain USC scholarships
Two schoolgirls whose friendship developed around an interest in biology at Gympie State High are now enjoying Science studies at the University of the Sunshine Coast.
Angela Wade, 18, and Hanagh Gilmore, 17, are delighted to have started their first year at University with a $6,000 scholarship each.
USC Vice-Chancellor’s Merit Scholarships, worth $6,000 over three years, are awarded annually to undergraduates for high academic achievement, leadership skills and financial need.
Angela is enjoying her double degree in Education/Science as well as campus life after moving from East Deep Creek to Sippy Downs.
“Cell Biology is my favourite course so far,” she said. “I want to be a secondary biology teacher. I love studying near the coast but still being close to family.”
Both said the scholarships helped them cover expenses related to their studies.
Hanagh works part-time and drives from Gympie to USC three days a week for her Occupational Therapy degree.
“I like this uni and lifestyle – it’s more relaxed and friendlier than Brisbane,” she said.
She was inspired by family members to seek a career as an occupational therapist.
