Biomedicine student gets the Ball rolling

Elizabeth Anthony and Jessika Ayres gear up for the USC Masquerade Ball

18 October 2011

The University of the Sunshine Coast’s Innovation Centre auditorium will be transformed into a 15th century carnival of colourful masks and flowing gowns at the University’s first masquerade ball on Saturday 29 October.

The event is the brainchild of USC Biomedical Science student Elizabeth Anthony, 20, who took on the task of organising the function shortly after moving from Melbourne to Maroochydore.

“Because I was new to the University and didn’t really know anyone, I decided that organising a ball would be a great way to meet people and make new friends,” she said.

Elizabeth said it didn’t take long to form a voluntary, 10-person ballroom committee once word spread that the gala event for USC students and staff was being planned.

Up to 250 guests will be catered for at the ball, which will be hosted by television newsreader and USC Journalism tutor Rosanna Natoli.

Elizabeth said the Innovation Centre’s auditorium would have a mystical atmosphere, with guests dining at tables draped in feathers, willow and beads.

“Costumes and themed events are a great talking point for people and seem to bring people out of their shells,” she said.

“Wearing a mask also adds an air of mystery to the function because people really don’t know who they are talking to.”

Ballroom guests will enjoy a three-course meal, music provided by a DJ and the chance to win a range of prizes.
