Class of 2001 to reunite at USC

USC 2001 graduates

25 October 2011

Former University of the Sunshine Coast students will head back to Sippy Downs next week with a decade of personal and professional triumphs to share.

Graduates from 2001 will celebrate their 10-year reunion on Saturday 5 November at USC’s Innovation Centre auditorium.

USC Alumni Relations Officer Anita Edmonds said the reunion was a great opportunity for past students to reminisce over shared experiences and to take part in a tour of the campus.

“It’s a wonderful opportunity to catch up and learn what others who studied at USC have done since they graduated,” she said.

“Many forged ahead with successful careers which have taken them across the country and to different parts of the world, while others have worked locally contributing to the development of the Sunshine Coast.”

Angelique Gilmour, who obtained a Bachelor of Social Science (Community Work), said her USC degree had steered her in many directions since she graduated in 2001.

“I found that my degree was great for a framework of practice which equipped me for a lot of varying roles,” she said.

“I initially continued in some fun-filled promotion and event management positions, before travelling overseas and returning to utilise my Social Science degree.

“I have worked for the Department of Child Safety in a myriad of roles including Queensland Adoptions and just recently I assisted with the Premier’s Disaster Relief Fund.”

Ms Gilmour said she was looking forward to participating in the campus tour of USC from 5-6.30pm and learning about the University’s many changes which include a new Olympic-sized pool and state-of-the-art gym facilities.

An informal reception will take place after the tour from 6.30-9.30pm at the Innovation Centre.

Rob Needham, who achieved a Bachelor of Business (International Business), said after graduation he spent four years working for the Defence Housing Authority before moving into the not-for-profit sector.

The Foundation Manager for the Churchie Foundation, who is now married with two children, said he was keen to catch up with friends at the reunion.

“One of the best things about being at USC was that I met some amazing people and the friendships that I forged are friendships for life,” he said.

“I also remember being attacked by magpies as I rode to uni, being part of the inaugural rugby union squad to represent USC, working in the library as a book shelf stacker, and the great meat pies that the canteen used to sell.”
