Distance no barrier for Executive MBA student

David Burns

7 December 2011

Commuting between Bendigo and the Sunshine Coast has proved no barrier for a dedicated Victorian student who recently completed his Executive Master of Business Administration (EMBA) at the University of the Sunshine Coast.

Executive Officer of the Central Victorian Health Alliance David Burns said participating in the interesting, on-campus classes for the EMBA program at USC definitely made his monthly 3,400km round trips worthwhile.

The EMBA has been designed to suit busy executives. It is delivered through intensive weekend classes once a month for two years.

Mr Burns, a former Buderim resident for 15 years, lists the University’s reputation and the EMBA’s concentrated learning format, as his reasons for studying at USC.

“I have had some previous connections with the University of the Sunshine Coast,” he said.

“I helped with the initial work in setting up the University’s Paramedic Science degree and I found USC’s academic groups and the philosophies of the University very appealing.

“The EMBA’s method of delivery also suits the timetable and calendar of busy people and the timetable for lectures are also known well in advance.”

Mr Burns, who has also obtained qualifications in nursing, paramedic science and education, said the EMBA had provided him with a rounded understanding of business administration which he could apply to his current role.

“The EMBA allows for a greater insight and understanding of organisations and the strategic planning of them,” he said.

“It’s also given me an ability to engage with executives across a range of professions.”
