Emma is USC’s Greatest Female Athlete
Emma McKenzie, 20, today became the University of the Sunshine Coast’s “Greatest Female Athlete”.
The Kuluin resident scored the most points after six gruelling events in the inaugural USC competition held at the campus gymnasium, stadium and athletics track.
USC Sports Officer Rachel Dickinson said the Paramedic Science student’s 30-point win reflected her outstanding all-round sporting background, including surf life saving and playing basketball for the Maroochydore Clippers.
Alexandra Headland swimmer Amy Thompson was second overall, after showing her particular prowess in the bench-press.
Amy lifted the equivalent of half her body weight 85 times to the cheers of her competitors and spectators.
Twin Waters kayaker Alyce Burnett came third after the six tests of fitness, skill and strength.
“It was great to see such goodwill and spirited competition among the six elite athletes,” Ms Dickinson said.
Brisbane squash player Jamie Peipman, Buderim triathlete Chloe Turner and Peregian Beach touch football player Rebecca Wolno completed the line-up.
Other events included badminton, basketball, rowing, football and a tough one-kilometre running race.
“Chloe won that race in three minutes, 24 seconds, which was a great effort at the end of the whole competition,” Ms Dickinson said.
USC Sport intends to hold the Greatest Female Athlete event again next year.
It was part of USC’s Sport for Women Week, encouraging more female students to try different sports and activities in a friendly atmosphere.
