Four USC teams bring home bronze medals

USC touch players compete in the Northern University Games

8 July 2011

Four of the eight University of the Sunshine Coast sporting teams that competed in the 2011 Northern University Games in Armidale this week returned home today with bronze medals.

In one of the University’s best results ever at these Games, USC came third in the men's touch football, mixed touch football, lawn bowls and women's volleyball.

While USC finished 10th from 11 on the medal tally, the efforts of its athletes against rivals from much larger universities were recognised with USC finishing 2nd in the Per Capita Trophy (based on the number of points earned divided by student population).

USC Sport Manager Nathan Gordon said the University’s 68 athletes acquitted themselves well at the event that attracted almost 1,000 students from tertiary institutions from as far as northern NSW to north Queensland.

“For four of our eight teams to medal, that must be up there as one of USC’s best achievements at the Northern University Games,” he said.

Mr Gordon said the touch teams were disappointed to have finished third, as only the two top teams in that sport can qualify for the Australian University Games later this year.

“But overall the students had a great time,” he said. “They enjoyed the strong sporting competition, made some new friends and really enjoyed the social aspects of the event.”

Australian University Sport organises the annual Games that focus on competition, participation and socialising in the host cities.

Full results are on the Australian University Sport website.
