Graduate inspired by science teaching
A 22-year-old University of the Sunshine Coast graduate who always wanted to teach high school science is now doing just that close to home on Brisbane’s northside.
Jessica McLean, of Bray Park, has graduated from USC with a double degree in Education and Science.
She is already well into her first semester of teaching Years 8-11 science and maths at Narangba Valley State High School.
“This job is excellent,” she said. “I really enjoy working with kids and helping them to learn about the world. I’m still learning each day too.”
Jessica was among 600 USC students who donned academic gowns to receive their degrees at two USC Graduation ceremonies on campus at Sippy Downs last month. More than 1,000 students completed degrees at USC in 2010.
Jessica said she particularly enjoyed the Sociology course as part of her University studies.
“It involved thinking for yourself, making your own decisions, not just relying on common viewpoints in society or the media,” she said.
She chose the local University because of the lifestyle, spacious campus and to join friends who were enrolled.
