Hundreds to celebrate multicultural campus
Students from more than 10 countries will share their cultures, customs and cuisines at the University of the Sunshine Coast’s Harmony Day this Thursday 31 March.
USC, which has International students from 60 countries on campus, will celebrate multiculturalism from 10am to 2pm with stalls, activities and performances between the Brasserie and Art Gallery.
Diverse music and entertainment will range from rising star violinist Saraid Hinton, who is studying Italian at USC, to an Indigenous didgeridoo workshop.
Saraid, a Siena Catholic College graduate, has performed with the Veronicas at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre and with the Queensland Youth Orchestra at the Sydney Opera House.
The USC crowds will enjoy foods from Indonesia, Mexico, Spain and Japan, demonstrations of American football and baseball, a Zen Meditation workshop and a focus on Ecuador’s biodiversity.
A Japanese tsunami fundraiser will involve students writing in Kanji.
USC Equity and Diversity Officer Marjorie Blowers said the University supported the annual event to promote inclusiveness, community harmony and the economic benefits of cultural diversity.
Stalls will include USC’s popular Global Opportunities (GO) Program, which offers domestic students the chance to study overseas, and the International Student Association.
The public are welcome and everyone is encouraged to wear their traditional dress or bright orange clothing.
