New support bursaries for undergraduates

22 June 2011

Growing community financial support will help another 25 undergraduates at the University of the Sunshine Coast find a better balance between their studies and part-time work.

USC Chancellor John Dobson said the establishment of the new, $4,000 USC Study Support Bursaries would assist 25 students in financial need over 12 months, starting when Semester 2 begins next month.

“Students today make tremendous sacrifices to attend university and many work more than 15 or 20 hours a week,” he said. “This bursary aims to allow students working excessive hours to dedicate more time to their degrees.”

USC Foundation Executive Officer Andrew Pentland said the $100,000 worth of new bursaries was the result of a significant private donation.

“Combining these new bursaries with other community-based awards, USC is supporting about 200 students a year,” he said. “And we are building a pool of funds, made up of tax-deductible donations of any size, to help more students over future years.”

More than 380 applications have been received for the 25 new bursaries and another 200 USC Equity Bursaries for Semester 2 students, either new or continuing.

The $1,000 Equity Bursaries are funded by the Commonwealth’s Higher Education Participation and Partnership Program to a total of $200,000.

While Semester 2 bursary applications have now closed, students can gain further information by calling 5430 2890.

Prospective donors can contact the Foundation Office on 5430 1104.
