School students become immersed in French

USC and high school students at last year's immersion event

13 July 2011

A record 440 students from 20 high schools as far north as Bundaberg and south to Moreton Bay will attend the University of the Sunshine Coast’s annual Immersion Language Days starting this Friday 15 July.

French is the most popular booking so far, with 187 students from multiple Year 10 and 11 classes looking forward to speaking nothing but French on Friday 15 July at the Sippy Downs campus.

The USC Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences each year matches native-speaking University students and community members with school students for the three-day program.

“It activates the students’ language learning through interaction with native speakers, lectures, computer workshops, conversation classes and interactive activities,” said USC organiser Gaby Ziegann.

It is part of the University’s policy of regional engagement, both cultural and educational, and showcases the relevant tertiary study opportunities available to regional youngsters to continue their interest in languages.
