Sport, media stars to inspire top students

25 January 2011

An Olympic gold medallist speed skater, a veteran television journalist and a solo adventurer who cycled around Africa will speak at a Golden Key conference at the University of the Sunshine Coast from 3-5 February.

USC is hosting the 2011 Golden Key Asia-Pacific Regional Conference, expected to attract about 200 top-performing students from across Australia, New Zealand and Malaysia.

The USC chapter of the Golden Key International Honour Society started in 2008 to encourage academic excellence; provide scholarship, career assistance, networking and leadership; and promote altruistic service to the community.

“It’s the first time the University has hosted this conference and it’s a fantastic opportunity for our members to network and develop personal and professional skills,” said president Lynette Maguire.

Aussie speed skater Steven Bradbury will explain to students the importance of strategy and planning to achieve goals, whether in sport or business.

Tony Jones, the host of TV’s Q&A news program, and Riaan Manser, a South African who cycled 37,000km around his continent, also will tell their stories.

Experts in psychology, economics, child literacy, human resources, academia, politics and the public sector will address the conference after it is opened by
USC Vice-Chancellor Professor Greg Hill.

Clive May and Anne Bowden of USC’s Career Connection will discuss the transition from university to employment as part of an industry and recruitment panel.

The Golden Key Society invites high-achieving undergraduates and postgraduates to join.
