Sporting students aim for glory at Uni Games
Wednesday night’s rugby league State of Origin showdown isn’t the only fiercely-fought interstate sporting competition on this week.
Almost 1,000 university students, including 68 from the University of the Sunshine Coast, are contesting the 2011 Northern University Games from today until Thursday 7 July in New South Wales.
USC Sport Manager Nathan Gordon has accompanied the University’s eight teams to Armidale for some friendly rivalry in basketball, lawn bowls, netball, touch football and volleyball.
“Our volleyball women are sure to be contenders for a medal after they won their first two games today, both three sets to nil, against Southern Cross University and Queensland University of Technology,” Mr Gordon said.
“The basketball women had a good win against Queensland University of Technology, 29-22.
“The men’s touch team won their first game 7-5 against Griffith University and the netballers had a very narrow defeat, by just one point, as Bond University took it 35-34.”
All finals will be held on Thursday.
Mr Gordon said he was impressed with the camaraderie of the sizeable contingent who travelled from the Sunshine Coast for the week.
“The Northern Games are a qualifier for the Australian University Games later this year, so we’re hoping to get some firsts and second-places to qualify,” he said.
USC results will be posted on Facebook: <http://www.facebook.com/uscsport>.
Australian University Sport organises the annual Games that focus on competition, participation and socialising in the host cities.
