Students recycle clothes to help environment
A fashion frenzy during Orientation Week at the University of the Sunshine Coast will aim to benefit charity, the environment and students’ hip pockets.
The clothing exchange, to be held from 11am to 2.30pm on Tuesday 15 February at the Uni Club, has been organised by USC Environmental Science student Katie Roberts.
The former fashion buyer and Melbourne design graduate will use the event to launch a new group on campus called Sustainability in Style.
“We’re encouraging all students to bring along unwanted fashion items and exchange them to create a new wardrobe,” Katie said.
“All proceeds of the gold coin donation event will go to the Uni Club’s emergency food fund and any leftover clothing will be donated to charity.”
Katie, 26, of Maroochydore, said the Sustainability in Style social group could incorporate regular clothing exchanges, sessions on how to mend clothes and outings to opportunity shops.
She aims to reduce waste in the textiles industries and intends to do Honours research later this year at USC on the sustainable fashion movement.
Katie last year received one of five $1,000 bursaries from the Sunshine Coast branch of Graduate Women Queensland.
