USC helps put Face to Buderim celebrations
Three University of the Sunshine Coast students are helping put a face to Buderim’s 150th anniversary (B150) celebrations through a social media project as part of their USC degree.
The three Bachelor of Business (Tourism, Leisure and Event Management) students are working with the Buderim War Memorial Community Association this semester to promote events for the village’s anniversary in 2012.
Their newly-launched B150 Facebook page links Buderim, virtually, to the world.
Annyse McLaren of Narangba, Megan Dodd of Elimbah and Yoko Seino of Sippy Downs have been praised by the B150 planning committee.
“The University students have shown tremendous enthusiasm and energy in building this Facebook site as a real and practical part of their coursework,” said committee member John Devers.
He said the volunteer organisation planned a year of community events for Buderim’s milestone in 2012.
Another USC student, Josh Carleton, is working as an intern with the committee.
The Bachelor of Business (Management) student from Maroochydore is focused on marketing elements in conjunction with his coursework.
USC Tourism, Leisure and Events Lecturer Vikki Schaffer said the hands-on experience and networking opportunities were invaluable for students.
“It also connects to the Coast community, working with people who have such passion and drive,” she said.
“Previous projects have resulted in employment opportunities so there’s a lot of further potential.”
A total of 37 USC students are working with local businesses and groups as part of the course, which examines how innovation and technology relate to the growth, success and sustainability of tourism, leisure and events.
