Warwick student receives scholarship

Tim Fairfax AM presents the scholarship to University of the Sunshine Coast Nutrition student Shanarah O'Leary

22 February 2011

A Warwick State High graduate who led her school’s community service committee is this week settling into a new community at the University of the Sunshine Coast.

“It’s a long way from home at Rosenthal Heights but it’s a spacious, nicely set-out uni and seems like a really good place to learn,” said Shanarah O’Leary, who decided to apply for USC after attending an Open Day last year.

Shanarah started her lectures at Sippy Downs this week after receiving a $12,000 Tim Fairfax Regional Scholarship, one of two presented at the recent USC Undergraduate Scholarships Presentation Ceremony.

Tim Fairfax AM told the ceremony how pleased he was to be able to provide the scholarships, which support students from regional or remote Queensland.

Worth $12,000 over three years, they are awarded for high academic achievement, leadership skills and financial need.

Shanarah is studying a Bachelor of Nutrition and Dietetics. The keen tennis and netball player would like to eventually combine her interests in health, food and sport into a career as a dietitian for athletes.

At high school she also enjoyed organising events for good causes, such as Shave for a Cure for the Leukaemia Foundation and 40-Hour Famine for World Vision.

“The scholarship means I can concentrate on studying at USC rather than getting a part-time job while I’m living away from home,” she said.

Shanarah was among 67 students who gained scholarships, ranging in value from $3,500 to $12,000, at the ceremony.
