Artist to attend opening of 10,000 Leaves

Elizabeth Poole's work White Leaf Boat

15 September 2011

Regional artist and environmentalist Elizabeth Poole will attend the official opening of her exhibition, 10,000 Leaves, at the University of the Sunshine Coast Gallery on Thursday 22 September at 6pm.

Ms Poole’s artwork features bent and twisted materials – including wire, plastic, feathers and fibre – which help present a compelling commentary about the environment.

The Toogoolawah artist lives and works in the Australian bush and says she is constantly inspired by the fragile and often fragmented landscape.

“The title 10,000 Leaves refers to the Buddhist poetic concept of ten thousand things and the dynamic interconnection and simultaneous unity of everything in the universe,” Ms Poole said.

“I constantly rediscover and ponder as I draw and make thousands of leaf shapes … each a miracle in itself.”

USC Gallery Curator Dawn Oelrich said this exhibition would be Ms Poole’s first solo exhibition at the University since 2004.

“Elizabeth’s observations of nature and her interpretation of the seen and unseen aspects of the landscape make for interesting and contemplative viewing,” Ms Oelrich said.

“Each leaf, each individual shape, naturally inspires the shapes created in her artwork.”

The exhibition will remain on show at the USC Gallery until Saturday 5 November.

The gallery is located at the University campus on Sippy Downs Drive, Sippy Downs. It is open free to the public from 10am to 4pm Monday to Saturday, but is closed Sundays and public holidays.

The 2011 University of the Sunshine Coast Gallery program is proudly supported by Coastline BMW and the Kurz family.
