Career advice gets speed dating treatment
A speed dating approach is being used by the University of the Sunshine Coast to help 75 teachers from across the region get the most out of tomorrow’s Career Adviser Day.
The annual event has attracted participants from as far away as Bundaberg and northern NSW who will take part in various sessions throughout the day, including the popular “8 careers in 80 minutes” segment.
This will involve career advisers from schools and TAFE colleges spending 10 minutes each with their choice of eight of the 28 USC academics who will be on hand to discuss study programs and graduate career prospects.
USC’s Acting External Relations Manager Julie Flanagan said this session would enable participants to gain in-depth knowledge about a wider range of programs offered by the University.
“It works very much like speed dating,” Ms Flanagan said. “Each academic sits at a table and the career advisers move from table to table when the bell rings at the end of each session.
“Last year, there was a really high level of energy in the room as each academic provided an overview of their program and then answered questions from the careers advisers at their table.
“The career advisers are very interested in learning whether certain programs and career outcomes provide a ‘match’ for their students.”
