Community water company bid to be outlined

9 June 2011

Sunshine Coast Councillor Debbie Blumel will discuss her proposal for a community water company for the region when she speaks to postgraduate students at the University of the Sunshine Coast tomorrow (Friday 10 June) at noon.

USC’s Associate Professor Peter Waterman said he had invited Cr Blumel – who holds council’s Major Projects portfolio – to address students of the Developing Climate Change Adaptation Strategies for Water Sector Management course.

Mr Waterman said the provision of water was currently a contentious issue on the Sunshine Coast.

“But universities are a place of discourse,” he said. “These students are people who are moving towards becoming water practitioners, so it’s important for them to hear the views of people involved in the industry first-hand.”

Mr Waterman said the University of the Sunshine Coast offered a range of postgraduate programs on Climate Change Adaptation, ranging from a Graduate Certificate and Graduate Diploma through to a Master degree.

He said the Developing Climate Change Adaptation Strategies for Water Sector Management course had been developed by USC for the International Centre of Excellence for Water Resources Management.

The course is offered by USC, other universities and online nationally and internationally.
