Design students stage exhibition at gallery

A design by Emily Ponton will feature in the Awake Me in Space exhibition

3 June 2011

A colourful and evocative exhibition of large format prints on paper, canvas and vinyl will open at the University of the Sunshine Coast’s Gallery on Thursday 9 June at 6pm.

The exhibition, called Awake Me in Space, will feature works by more than 40 advanced-level Design students from USC who have explored the themes of “the changing aspects of technology, fantasy, the human form, culture and metropolis”.

It will be officially opened by USC alumnus Max Duff. Max graduated from USC in 2005 and is now the Senior Designer of Unit International clothing for BMX, Moto and FMX.

Lecturer in Digital Design Dr Debra Livingston said this annual exhibition demonstrated the students’ innovation and creativity.

“Concentrating on digital illustration, the students are encouraged to experiment with photography, painting and drawing skills combined with computer software to produce a dynamic body of art work,” she said.

Dr Livingston said USC’s Bachelor of Computer-Based Design prepared students for a variety of careers, including advertising, graphic design, multimedia design, packaging, publishing, visual communication and web design.

She said exhibitions by Design students at the USC Gallery were always popular with university and high school students who are considering careers in design.

“The exhibition is an opportunity for the University to show the broader community what our students are doing and what is at the forefront of graphic design in Queensland,” she said.

Awake Me In Space will be at the USC Gallery until Saturday 9 July and then at Gympie Regional Gallery from 16 August to 3 September.

The USC Gallery is located at the University campus on Sippy Downs Drive, Sippy Downs. It is open free to the public from 10am to 4pm Monday to Saturday. The Gallery is closed Sundays and public holidays.
