Exhibition by award-winning photographer

Lisa Maree William's portrait of Jessica Origliasso of The Veronicas

5 July 2011

A photographic portrait exhibition of famous and not-so famous people will open at the University of the Sunshine Coast Gallery on Thursday 14 July at 6pm.

The exhibition, by former Sunshine Coast resident and now Sydney-based photojournalist Lisa Maree Williams, will trace Ms Williams’ career as an international award-winning photographer over the past several years.

Guest speakers at the exhibition opening will be Gubbi Gubbi man Kerry Neil and founding USC Vice-Chancellor Emeritus Professor Paul Thomas AM.

Gallery Curator Dawn Oelrich said Ms Williams covered some of Australia’s most memorable news and cultural events.

“Her work with East Timorese refugees, which we hosted at the USC Gallery in 2008, was awarded Australian Photojournalist Association Documentary Award in 2003,” she said.

“She was a semi-finalist in the 2008 and 2011 Moran Portrait Prize and selected as a finalist in the 2009 and 2010 Head On Photographic Competition – one of Australia's most critically acclaimed photographic portrait prizes.

“In 2007, Lisa completed a photo series with Australia's National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA). Titled ‘The Players’, it was sponsored by Canon Australia and exhibited as large-scale prints in conjunction with the annual Sydney Arts Festival. Seven of those prints will feature in this exhibition.”

Ms Williams was named 2009 Sony World Photo Competition – Natural History winner and her work “Wildlife Warriors” was included in a hard cover book and joined a group exhibition that travelled to major cities around the world.

Her work has appeared in major titles including Time, The London Times, Wall Street Journal, Rolling Stone Magazine, The Australian, Vogue, Harpers Bazaar, The Washington Post, Sydney Morning Herald, Los Angeles Times, Bild der Frau and View Magazine.

Ms Williams’ exhibition will open on the same night as Big Eye Animations, touring from QUT/CyberTribe Productions, and Feeling Safe from USC’s Engage Research Labs.

All three exhibitions will be at the USC Gallery until Saturday 20 August. The gallery is located at the University campus on Sippy Downs Drive, Sippy Downs. It is open free to the public from 10am to 4pm Monday to Saturday. The Gallery is closed Sundays and public holidays.

The 2011 University of the Sunshine Coast Gallery program is proudly supported by Coastline BMW and the Kurtz family.
