Exhibition features drawings by top artists
Works by some of Australia’s top drawing artists have gone on display at the University of the Sunshine Coast’s Gallery in a touring exhibition that opened last night (Thursday 24 March).
The JADA: Jacaranda Acquisitive Drawing Award Exhibition is a touring initiative of the Grafton Regional Gallery, which holds an annual competition to promote excellence in Australian contemporary drawing.
Acquisitions from this competition, held in October 2010, have entered Grafton Regional Gallery’s nationally recognised collection of Australian contemporary drawing.
The JADA exhibition at USC comprises the top 46 works of 426 entries in the competition.
It was officially opened last night by Grafton Regional Gallery Director Jude McBean and will continue at the USC Gallery until Saturday 30 April.
USC Gallery Curator Dawn Oelrich said about 170 people attended the opening event. Among the crowd was a large contingent of International students who are studying at the University this semester.
Ms Oelrich said Queensland artists, including Gabrielle Turnbull and Kevin Oxley of the Sunshine Coast, were well represented in the exhibition.
“Sydney artist Peter Alwast won the award in October, and the Grafton Regional Gallery acquired works by Anna Hoyle, Lisa Jones and Miles Hall, who also won the Sunshine Coast Art Prize in 2010,” she said.
The Gallery is located at the University campus on Sippy Downs Drive, Sippy Downs. It is open free to the public from 10am to 4pm Monday to Saturday and closed Sundays and public holidays.
JADA is the second exhibition of the 2011 University of the Sunshine Coast Gallery program, which is proudly supported by Coastline BMW and the Kurtz family.
